Skier
So about me… Well first my name is Kalen Thorien. Now this sport was quite foreign to me and it wasn’t until we moved to Idaho and spent everyday trying to look like the pros. Then, at 18 and fresh out of school, I gave myself one last ski fling in the form of High North Ski Camp in Whistler, B.C.. Little did I know that this week would change my life for good. It didn’t take much honestly, but the nail in my college career coffin was hammered in by a skier named Eric Hoji. Watching him ski even the tiniest little lines that were still possible during the summer glacier extravaganza, was the most inspiring thing I had ever seen. I couldn’t lie to myself, that’s what I wanted to do. That’s all I wanted to do!

Kashmir is not just mountains, shepherds and ibex. This week the crew rolls into the Gulmarg ski resort, which sits a scant mile from the line of control that separates India and Pakistan. Although the opposing military powers might be a little skittish, the skiers certainly aren’t. They take to the backcountry with gusto and…

“…to arrive in the Rocky Mountains by plane would be to see them in one kind of context, as pretty scenery. But to arrive after days of hard travel across the prairies would be to see them in another way, as a goal, a promised land.” So your engine is warmed up. You’ve…
